Tooth Scary is the brainchild of Randy + Joanne Harvey. Randy is a monster-loving sculptor and mold maker, and Joanne is an enthusiastic problem solver and technology lover.
When our eldest son lost his first tooth late one night, we were panicked when we discovered we had no cash on hand. How could we be so unprepared? All kids know about and expect a visit from the cash-laden Tooth Fairy! An inconvenient trip to the nearest cash machine yielded a $20 bill–far too much for the going tooth rate, even after adjusting for inflation since our own tooth-losing days. We decided to write our child an I.O.U. and stuff the note under the pillow.
Next was the challenge of retrieving tooth out from under our light-sleeping son’s pillow. Like most kids, he had placed the tooth directly under his head, so we were forced to design a sort of lever system with a large book (an Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs) in order to slowly raise the head + pillow and get to the tooth. At this point we’d sacrificed most of our precious movie-watching time just to deal with a single baby tooth.
This scenario played out more than once in our house, which is how the idea for the Tooth Scary was hatched. What if we made a tooth holder that could be both a cherished toy AND serve to make our tooth-scavenging job easier and less stressful?! We recruited our sons to do some monster designs, Randy started sculpting, and Joanne started planning. The end result: the Tooth Scary line. These little monsters are on a big mission to make parents’ jobs easier and keep teeth safe for the Tooth Fairy.
